Getting Ready for Your Next RV Road Trip

Summary: Before hitting the road for your next big road trip, you will want to make sure you have a plan and are ready for whatever obstacle may come your way.

The summer time is the perfect time of year to explore the outdoors. RV road trips are a bit different from standard day trips or traveling via flights because your RV will serve as both your means of transportation and your home while you are on vacation. If you have a road trip planned with family or friends, you will want to make sure everything is ready before you hit the road.

Check the Road and Weather Ahead of Time

When taking an RV trip, a lot of your time will naturally be spent on the road. For safety reasons you should get in the habit of checking road and weather conditions ahead of time. Research your routes ahead of time so you have a good idea of where you are going. If you will be going through the mountains and there is a chance of snow, for instance, pack snow chains and understand how to use them when the time comes. If you are expecting rain in the evening, make sure your sunroof is closed and that your RV is prepared for a potentially slippery road.

Have a Timeline

As with any trip, coming up with a timeline could help you stay on track to visit all of the important sites you want to check out. A flexible timeline could give you time to see any other interesting spots you hear about or wiggle room if something unexpected puts you behind schedule.

Check Electronic Capacities

While at home, you can easily plug all of your appliances and devices in without any worries. RVs, unfortunately, are not designed to handle electrical loads that heavy. In order to not overwhelm your RV battery, label your toaster, microwave, blow dryer, and so forth. Keep an eye on how much power you are using to keep the RV in a safe working condition.
